Hi, I’m Sara Cottingham.

I'm an independent consultant based in Morgantown, West Virginia. I launched this business in 2024 after more than a decade in community and economic development.

About me

Working with rural communities is what gets me up in the morning. I see opportunity in often overlooked places, and I love helping these towns translate their strengths into real economic improvement.

Over my career, I've worked with more than 40 clients across seven states. Since 2021, I've served as the contracted Grants Coordinator for the Mon Forest Towns Partnership, coordinating grant writing and project development across the 12 gateway communities to the Monongahela National Forest. Many of my other clients are also based in the greater Mon Forest region, including other towns and nonprofits advancing shared community and economic development priorities.

West Virginia became my home in 2012, when I first moved here as a VISTA Volunteer. I hold a B.A. in Geography and an M.S. in Community & Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin, along with a Certificate in Financial Success for Nonprofits from Cornell University. By training, I'm a community planner and geographer, but at heart I'm an entrepreneur. I own and operate three small businesses: this consulting firm, my art business, and a rental property I've fully renovated myself.

Outside of work, I spend time out on the trails with my dogs and enjoying everything the Mountain State has to offer. I'm also an artist, musician, and a member of the West Virginia Creative Network. You can check out my creative work here.
